Sipho H. Showa

The founder of Lumen is Sipho H. Showa. He is a Chartered Public Relations Practitioner and a lawyer with over 20 years in corporate affairs and media. Sipho also holds degrees in business and English, the latter for which he earned a First Class as well as a post graduate qualification in education.

Therefore, his public relations skills are cemented by knowledge of business, the law, governance, and strong writing skills.

His public relations experience spans organisations such as Debswana where he was part of the team that worked on the global Diamonds for Development campaign, Botswana Insurance Holdings Limited where he was Director of Corporate Services responsible for amongst others marketing and communications as well as BBS Limited where at various stages, he has held the positions of Head of Marketing & Communications/Corporate Affairs and Company Secretary. In his career, Sipho has developed and launched brands, marketing, and communications strategies.

Crisis communications is one of his specialities, including what he calls “litigation crisis communications” which enables parties involved and their lawyers to focus on the legal issues and Lumen, on communications management, cleverly navigating the sub judice principle in the process. Being a trained lawyer and a public relations specialist, Sipho has a clear appreciation that public statements issued by law firms on behalf of clients hardly ever achieve the desired public relations effect. That is because styles of communicating by public relations experts and lawyers are markedly different.

His Boardroom experience as Chairman, Non-Executive Director and Company Secretary variously with leading entities such as BBS Limited; Botswana Insurance Holdings Limited as well as its subsidiaries Botswana Life, Bifm, Legal Guard; Old Mutual Short-Term Insurance; Old Mutual Botswana Holdings; Mutual & Federal; and Masiela Trust Fund gives him the unique ability of being able to integrate public relations, governance, and business in order to develop compelling communications.

Sipho was engaged by the Government of the Republic of Botswana’s Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 to help develop and manage communications strategies aimed at managing the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in Botswana. This gave him a deep understanding of Government Relations and communications. He also previously worked as a journalist, producer, and broadcaster, and was the first on air when Botswana Television was launched on 31 April 2000. His knowledge of the media industry and experience also empowered him skills to be able to train those that may have to appear before the media.
